Ohkay Owingeh PreK is the first tribally operated PreK program in the state of New Mexico. The 2013-2014 program year is the first year the program will be in operation. Ohkay Owingeh PreK is located on the Ohkay Owingeh reservation in the same complex as the Head Start Program. Children from the surrounding areas are welcomed and encouraged to apply to attend the PreK program.
The program will have one classroom which will serve seventeen children in one session, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. One Teacher and one Teacher Assistant will operate the classroom. Bus service will be provided to children attending the PreK program.
Creative Curriculum is the curriculum which will be utilized in the education of the children enrolled in the program. Creative Curriculum focuses on six areas of development and learning which include social-emotional, physical, language, cognitive, literacy and mathematics. The classroom or learning environment, is intentionally set-up to promote learning through play and the development of critical thinking skills. The New Mexico Early Learning Guidelines along with child portfolio documentation are utilized to track and monitor the development of each individual child.
Parents are valued and honored as their childrens first educators and are encouraged to be involved in every facet of their childrens education. Without parent involvement success for the children and program is unachievable; therefore, the program will create many opportunities for parents to be involved, from classroom volunteering to monthly parent meetings, family activity nights and other activities of parents interest.
